My Bodyguard, a nice 80's teen diversion

My Bodyguard (1980)

Netflix Average Rating: 3.6 stars

Here's your chance to check out Matt Dillon in one of his earliest film roles, a bully who extorts money from kids on the pretense of protection.  Chris Makepeace, who has mesmerizing screen presence, is the new kid in town, just your average kid, and refuses to pay.  As Dillon's gang grows steadily meaner to him, he befriends the hulking Adam Baldwin and strikes a deal with him to be his bodyguard.  It's a pretty cool way (though not original, I remember kids doing this in middle school) to circumvent a bully, but the film later devolves into a grand showdown between the teams.  The film is gentle and good-hearted and would be fine for kids of any age.  Especially memorable is the character played by Paul Quandt, a young freckled boy who prophesizes gloom and doom when his friend refuses to give in to Dillon's pressure.
