Bart Got a Room, nice coming-of-age comedy about finding a prom date

Nothing especially creative, just a good little ("little" is shorthand for critics meaning "low budget") flick about a high school kid needing to find a prom date, desperately, because even one of the geekiest social outcasts Bart got a date, and a room. Sigh, the things people will do just to validate themselves, for themselves. But thankfully, the film doesn't get too caught up in all that; it's just a down-to-earth flick with a sorta paternal feel to it. Watching a dude fall head over heals for a girl who teases like a little Lolita with a lollipop who's also actually not interested; seeing another girl become really let down because her best friend didn't ask her to the prom, you get the sense the filmmakers have treaded some of these waters before, and they deal with it in a warm-hearted way. When a girl the main character Steven Kaplan has a crush on compares him to his car, the reliable old Buick, do you want to guess what happens? Also, the lead characters Kaplan and Alia Shawkat are smart, nice, modest kids. Likable kids are refreshing to see in a teen comedy, after this genre has been dominated for so long by horndog trash like American Pie. B+, but it's an A if we're grading on the curve.

  1. What, you mean you don't identify with incredibly sarcastic individualists for your protagonists?

  2. I think you are referring to American Pie's Stifler character. Am I right??

  3. Well, I was, but now that I think about it, it really applies to every set of protagonists in every generic teen movie.

  4. There is one cynical character in the movie, the best friend, but he doesn't ruin Bart Got a Room.
