Happy Accidents, funny romantic comedy with a touch of mystery

Happy Accidents (2001)

I never could get enough of Marisa Tomei, that pretty, charming brunette lady with the chipmunk face and the heart of gold. Here again she plays a compassionate woman getting over a string of failed relationships when she meets Vincent D'Onofrio (Oh no!), a handsome guy with a boyish charm and it seems enough skeletons to fill the entire closet. He's afraid of puppy dogs, carries the stock family photos that came with his wallet, and claims he has jetlag from traveling through time. He comes to stay with her, and she learns to humor his eccentricities, but questions whether their relationship needs more truth to survive. Tomei has too many sources to vent her frustrations: a psychiatrist, her best friend, an over-arching narrative, and the boyfriend himself.  But it's not too much of a distraction. The humor is light and punchy, and the best scenes are when the couple are out in public and someone probes him with a question that relates to his weird past involving the future (I can't believe I just said that). He coolly demonstrates a scientific principle in one scene using a wine glass, and in another hilarious scene with Anthony Michael Hall fields the question, "If the future is so great, then why did you come back to the past?" Four stars, and has a surprising ending.
