Imagine: John Lennon, great and insightful doc about the master artist

Imagine: John Lennon (1988)

Netflix Average Rating: 4.0 stars

A poster on Netflix writes that the recent biopics of Ray Charles and Johnny Cash have gotten all the acclaim recently, but that "real life documentaries like John Lennon's Imagine and Bob's Dylan's No Direction Home are much more interesting." It's true, there is a lot of benefit from the hundreds of hours of footage of Lennon, especially given all the sensational, awesome stuff he did when he hooked up with Yoko Ono, like staging a bed-in for peace (the doc shows footage of an argument he has with an ornery old guy who takes issue with the couple's demonstrations because they aren't "modest"). There's footage of John doing a funny outtake of Imagine on piano, a bit of a recording session where the band was high in tension, and some priceless songs where the ex-Beatle grits his teeth and hammers Paul with lines like "the only thing you done was yesterday". Interviews with biographers, Lennon's son, Yoko give insights into the man's heart and mind, which was constantly changing over the years. It's riveting through and through. If you're a Beatles fan, you will love it no doubt.
