The Auteur, raunchy comedy about a porn director

Melik Malkasian must take his indie acting career pretty seriously, because after Film Geek (also directed by James Westby) he put on a ton of weight to play this grungy, lovable porn director. The movie is funny at times, as when we view a trailer for the porno ripoff of Fight Club. But that's the problem; most of the jokes revolve around funny porn titles (like Full Metal Jackoff), and milking Malkasian's stereotypical Spanish-American persona for all its worth -- though it is funny when he gives a little diatribe about "googling". The plot simply follows the porn director from one film to the next as he tries to regain his fame and a former lover. It paints in broad strokes, lacking the homespun, personal feel of Film Geek, where the story propelled the action. I can see how Westby was trying to tell an Ed Wood type story, but Malkasian's sincerity as a "serious" porn director grows tiresome after a while. Disappointing, but I'm still looking forward to the duo's next work.
